Too formal
A tailcoat, white tie, or an over-the-top ballgown for an intimate dinner can tip into too much.
Too casual
A daytime sundress, separates, flats, or anything you would wear to the office. All read as underdressed.

By country & season
In the US, floor-length is expected. In the UK and Europe an elegant midi can pass. Summer weddings allow lighter fabrics and colour; winter leans darker and richer.
