What it actually means
Dressy but not formal. The classic answer is a knee-length or midi cocktail dress, or a sharp suit or elevated separates. Refined, put-together, and easy to move and mingle in.
The safe choice
A knee-length or midi dress in a refined fabric with heels or elegant flats. A well-cut jumpsuit or tailored separates also read perfectly.
Too formal
A floor-length ballgown or full black tie is usually a step beyond cocktail.
Too casual
A sundress, denim, or anything casual enough for daytime errands.
